Fly Tying the Elk Hair Caddis


Hook: #10-20 Tiemco 100SP-BL
  • Thread: Tan or Cream UTC 70
  • Body: Olive Superfine Dubbing
  • Rib: X-Small Gold Wire
  • Wing: Natural or Bleached Elk Hair


  • First tie thread half way down the hook shank tie until thread is over top of the barb. Then tie on ribing at just before the bend. Dub your dubbing sparsely until one eye length away from the eye. Then tie the hackle on and twist backward down the hook shank until the barb. Tie off hackle with ribbing and twist ribbing forward until one eye length away from the eye and tie off. After take a small clump of stacked elk hair.Measure elk hair tips to the bend of the hook and tie elk hair off just before the eye. Clip the butts square. Fold butts up and wrap the thread forward to behind the eye do a two half hitches and clip off thread and apply cement to the head.
